‘Green’ child care centre now open in Mississauga
The Little Green Schoolhouse is a new child care service which officially opened in late October, fulfilling educator/owner Joanne Deidun-Roork’s vision for an eco-friendly centre which supports early childhood development and learning.
Located in the Lakeview Community of Applewood Acres, the licensed early childhood centre offers half-day programs for children preschool to senior kindergarten age. A hands-on, literacy rich curriculum, integrating language, math, science and the arts, also emphasizes healthy living within the learning experience. Deidun-Roork states, “Our primary motivation for going green is to provide children with the fundamentals for a healthy, well-rounded life experience inclusive of their first learning environment.”
The centre boasts a secure playground area large enough to incorporate an organic garden where the children will help plant fruits and vegetables. Seasonal garden foods will then be incorporated into the school menu and weekly lesson plans.
The eco-friendly facility, a newly renovated bungalow home at 805 North Service Road just east of Cawthra Road in Mississauga South, creates a family-like environment. Great care was taken in its design, with materials and equipment chosen to meet key renovation objectives: excellent indoor air quality, low energy utilization and minimum environmental impact.
